Cracked, spalling and loose bricks and stones replaced and reset with matched materials, so the chimney looks original and stays sound.
Brick and stone are tough, but water gets into every weakness. A brick that holds moisture freezes and flakes off its face, a process called spalling. A stone that loses its mortar shifts, and the stones around it follow. Left alone, a few damaged units can become a whole section of failing masonry.
We replace what must be replaced and save what can be saved. Damaged bricks and stones are removed one at a time, new or salvaged units are set in fresh mortar and the courses are kept straight and level. We match size, color and texture as closely as we can, so the repair fits with the rest of the chimney.
Water enters the face of a soft or old brick, freezes and pushes the surface off. Replacing the unit and fixing the water entry stops the cycle.
Stone chimneys have irregular joints. Loose stones are lifted out, cleaned and reset in new mortar in the same pattern.
Older chimneys use brick that is hard to find new. We look for salvaged brick or the closest match in color and size.
A repair that does not address the crown, cap and joints will fail again. We check them all so the new work lasts.
