A damaged firebox is repaired or fully rebuilt with fresh firebrick and refractory mortar, so heat stays where it belongs.
The firebox takes the heat. Over years of fires the firebrick cracks, the mortar erodes and the back wall can start to separate. Gaps in the firebox can let heat and sparks reach the structure behind it, which is why this repair matters for safety as well as looks.
We inspect the firebox, damper and smoke chamber and then repair what we find. Minor damage can be repaired with new firebrick and refractory mortar. When the firebox is badly worn, a complete rebuild gives you a fresh, tight chamber and a fireplace that looks new. We also take the chance to check the damper and the throat while everything is open.
Cracked or missing bricks, open joints, a wall that is bulging or sagging and daylight or darkness visible through gaps are all signs of trouble.
A few cracked bricks can be replaced. Widespread damage or a failing back wall is better fixed by rebuilding the whole firebox.
Only high-temperature mortar and firebrick belong in a firebox. Standard brick and mortar will fail quickly in the heat.
We lay firebrick in the traditional pattern for your fireplace and keep joints tight and thin, which is what makes a firebox last.
