Chimney Cleaning and Sweeping

A tidy, thorough sweep that removes soot and creosote from the flue, smoke chamber and firebox so every fire starts clean and draws well.

Every fire leaves something behind. Soot, ash and a tar-like residue called creosote cling to the inside of the flue, and over a season they build up into a layer that narrows the passage, slows the draft and feeds the next fire. A regular sweep takes that layer out before it becomes a problem, and it is one of the simplest ways to keep a fireplace safe and pleasant to use.

Our sweeps are done with the right brush for your flue, rods that flex around bends and a vacuum that keeps the dust in the pipe and out of your living room. We protect the floor, clean the firebox, check what we can see on the way and tell you plainly what we found, with photos when it helps.

Brushes matched to the flue

A round clay flue, a square tile and a stainless liner each need a different brush. Using the wrong one leaves buildup behind or scratches the surface, so we pick the right tool for your chimney.

A clean house when we leave

We lay drop cloths, seal the firebox opening and run a high-power vacuum while we work. The goal is that you can tell we were there only by the clean flue.

A look while we are in there

A sweep is also a chance to spot cracked tiles, a stuck damper, heavy glaze or signs of water. We note anything unusual and explain what it means, without pressure to fix anything.

Advice on how often

How often you need a sweep depends on how much you burn, what you burn and the condition of your flue. We give you a simple schedule you can actually follow.

Questions

Chimney Cleaning and Sweeping FAQ

How often should a chimney be swept?

Many homes need it once a year. Heavy use or wet wood can mean more often, and a rarely used fireplace may need less. An inspection tells you for sure.

Will sweeping make a mess?

We protect the floor and use a vacuum, so the mess is small. A little fine dust in the firebox is normal and gets vacuumed away.

How long does a sweep take?

Most take under an hour. A heavily built-up flue or a long chimney can take longer.

Do I need to be home?

We like you to be there at the start and the end. We need access to the fireplace and the roof or exterior.

Can you sweep a chimney I have not used in years?

Yes, and it is a good idea before the first fire. Old nests, debris and damp soot are common in a chimney that has sat unused.
