Cracked or loose clay flue tiles are repaired or replaced so the flue is sealed and the chimney is safe to use.
Clay flue tile has lined chimneys for a hundred years. It handles heat well and resists acids, but it does not like sudden temperature changes or water. A hard freeze, a chimney fire or a leak can crack tiles or open the joints between them. When that happens, the flue is no longer a sealed path and needs attention.
We find the problem with a camera and decide between repair and replacement. If only the top tile is cracked, we can replace it. If the damage runs deeper, relining may be the better solution. Whatever we recommend, the goal is the same: a flue that carries smoke safely out of the house.
Cracks and open joints are hard to see from the top. A camera scan shows the tile along its full length and reveals which sections are damaged.
The top tile takes the worst of the weather and is the easiest to replace. A new tile and a flexible joint can bring back a damaged top.
Open joints between tiles can sometimes be sealed from inside. We explain whether that is a lasting solution for your flue.
If many tiles are cracked or the flue has had a fire, a stainless liner is usually a better value than piecemeal repair.

You tell us about the chimney, fireplace or stove and what you have noticed, and we set a visit that fits your day.
We look closely at the chimney, inside and out, ask how you use it and take photos of anything of note.
We explain what is urgent, what can wait and what is optional, and give you a written scope and options.
We lay drop cloths, seal the firebox and protect the roof and landscaping before any work begins.
We sweep, repair or install with the right tools and materials, checking our work as we go.
We clean up, show you what we did, share tips and set a reminder for your next visit.
Freezing, chimney fires, settling and water are the usual causes.
The top tile can. Tiles deeper in the chimney are harder to reach, and relining may be better.
It can let heat and smoke reach the wood around the chimney, so it should be fixed before use.
Top tile work is often done in a few hours.
For widespread damage, yes. A liner makes a new continuous path.
