Cracked firebrick, loose hearth stones, stuck dampers and drafty openings fixed so the fireplace is safe, tidy and a pleasure to use.
The fireplace is the part of the system everyone sees, and it ages in plain view. Firebricks crack, mortar joints open, the hearth shifts, the damper sticks and the opening picks up stains. Most of these problems start small and get worse with each fire, and some of them, like gaps in the firebox, are safety issues as well as cosmetic ones.
We repair fireplaces from the damper down. We inspect the firebox, the throat, the smoke shelf and the hearth, explain what we find and fix it with materials made for heat. If the fireplace needs more than repair, such as a full rebuild of the firebox or a new liner, we tell you honestly and walk you through the options.
Cracked firebricks and open joints let heat reach the framing behind. We replace damaged bricks and refill joints with refractory mortar made for the high temperatures of a firebox.
A hearth that has shifted or cracked is a trip and fire hazard. We reset or replace stones and repair the surrounding masonry.
A stuck or warped damper or a rusted throat makes smoke spill and wastes energy. We free it, repair it or replace it.
Ordinary mortar breaks down in a fire. Refractory materials are made for the heat of a firebox and keep the repair lasting.
